How To Buy Mobile or Manufactured Home Insurance

If you own a mobile home, you may want insurance protection against three types of loss:

  1. Damage to your home from fire, windstorm, or other physical damage;
  2. Theft of personal property;
  3. Legal liability for injury or damage which is not auto-related, arising out of your negligence or that of members of your family.
Mobile home insurance provides coverage similar to the regular homeowner’s policy, but is tailored to meet the specific needs of the mobile homeowner.

Generally, it costs more to insure a mobile home than a conventional house because of the differences in construction and the mobile home’s greater susceptibility to wind damage.

It is important to remember that different companies see different things as “risky”, so it is important to do some checking. A few items that can affect your rate or even your ability to buy insurance are:
  • Certain breeds of dogs
  • Any animals with a bite/scratch history
  • Trampolines
  • Hot tubs
  • Swimming pools
  • Decks, patios or stairs without rails
  • Lack of proper maintenance
Factory home insurance policy buying tips:
  • Answer questions on the application completely
  • Never sign a blank application
  • Do not pay the agent in cash
  • Make checks payable to the insurance company
  • Write the type of policy that you are paying for in the memo portion of your check
  • If you are turned down for insurance, ask for the specific reason
  • Do not buy on price alone
  • Ask about discounts for burglar & fire alarms, dead bolts etc
  • Ask about new home or multi-policy discounts
